Project Kiwi Trust has been managing kiwi conservation on the Kūaotunu Peninsula, just 15 minutes north of Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula, since 1996. The Trust celebrates its 30th year this year, the first kiwi conservation initiative in Aotearoa (and the world!) to celebrate this milestone.
The Trust is proud of what it has achieved to date as well as the continued energy and enthusiasm it maintains.
The Trust currently uses a combination of pest and predator management as well as Operation Nest Egg to achieve its primary objective of protecting and enhancing the kiwi population on the Kūaotunu Peninsula.
The Trust services over 900 traps 12 times a year, monitors kiwi and undertakes seasonal poison pulses. The Trust has also invested in a habitat and biodiversity inventory as the first stage in understanding a whole-of-ecosystems approach to the management of biodiversity on the Kūaotunu Peninsula.
The trust is an experience-rich community group with a long, successful track record of kiwi conservation and working with hapū, whānau, iwi, residents, other community groups, the Department of Conservation, Waikato Regional Council and other agencies.
The Trust operates with integrity and professionalism and strives to contribute to greater regional and national kiwi recovery goals.
