Project Kiwi Trust has been managing kiwi conservation on the Kuaotunu Peninsula, just 15 minutes north of Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula, since 1996. In 2021 the Trust celebrated its 25th year, the first kiwi conservation initiative in Aotearoa (and the world!) to celebrate this milestone.
The Trust is proud of what it has achieved to date as well as the continued energy and enthusiasm it maintains.
The Trust currently uses a combination of pest and predator management as well as Operation Nest Egg to achieve its primary objective of protecting and enhancing the kiwi population on the Kuaotunu Peninsula.
The Trust services over 550 traps 12 times a year, monitors kiwi, and utilises the Operation Nest Egg programme. The Trust has also invested in a habitat and biodiversity inventory as the first stage in understanding a whole-of-ecosystems approach to the management of biodiversity on the Kuaotunu Peninsula.
The trust is an experience-rich community group with a long, successful track record of kiwi conservation and working with the Department of Conservation, Iwi, and other agencies.
The Trust operates with integrity and professionalism and strives to contribute to greater regional and national kiwi recovery goals.
